LAN or Local Area Network consists of multiple network devices, such as computers, that connect by using routers or switchers. The LAN connection uses a cable to transfer data, which makes the process faster than with WLAN or the Wireless Local Area Network.

Typically, LAN connections allow for data transference with a bandwidth of 100mb per second. When using gigabyte LAN network equipment, the velocity can reach up to 1Gmbps. WLAN networks do not transfer data through cable, but rather utilize wireless transmitters and receivers. The wireless transference can be limited to a maximum speed of 54mbps.

Besides different data transference speeds, both WLAN and LAN offer varying levels of security. Since WLANs are wireless networks, the signal can be detected by anyone with a strong receiver. Routers can be hacked, and the information sent through the WLAN can be intercepted. With the LAN, data interception only occurs if the connection is made physically.
